Romanov, Boris Aleksandrovich

Born Jan. 29 (Feb. 10), 1889, in St. Petersburg; died July 18, 1957, in Leningrad. Soviet historian. Doctor of historical sciences (1941) and professor (1947).

Romanov graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1912. He worked at the Central Archive from 1918 to 1929, at institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from the mid-1930’s, and at the Leningrad section of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences from 1944 to 1957. He simultaneously taught at Leningrad University from 1919 to 1927 and from 1944 to 1951. Romanov’s most important studies were on ancient Russian history, on the study of sources, and on the history of Russian imperialism, including policy problems in the Far East at the turn of the 20th century, the diplomatic history of the Russo-Japanese War, and financial relations with the West.
