Tervete Gorodishche

a fortified settlement of the first millennium B.C. to the 13th century A.D., in what is now Dobele Raion, Latvian SSR. It was the chief economic and political center of the Zemgalians. Half of the site (1,460 sq m) was excavated by the Latvian archaeologists E. Brivkalne (from 1951 to 1959) and F. Zagorskis (1960). Discoveries have included defensive walls, dwellings, workshops, and structures related to various phases of economic life. The cultural layer, up to 7 m deep, contained objects related to land cultivation, stock raising, and crafts, as well as objects connected with the settlement’s daily life, trade relations, and culture.
