Location:East of Monroe on LA 577 in West Carroll Parish.

Special Features:Poverty Point preserves one of North America's most significantarcheological sites, dating between 1650 and 700 BC. A highly civilizedgroup, the Poverty Point inhabitants built a complex array earthenmounds and ridges overlooking the Mississippi River floodplain. Thecentral construction consists of six rows of concentric ridges, whichat one time were five feet high. The five aisles and six sections ofridges form a partial octagon, with the diameter of the outermostridges measuring three-quarters of a mile. In 1962, Poverty Point wasdesignated a National Historic Landmark.
