a monthly humor magazine for preschoolers and first graders. Published in Moscow since 1956. Circulation (1971), 5.6 million copies.

Printed in vivid pictures on the pages of Veselye kartinki (Merry Pictures) are tales, amusing adventures, riddles, games, and the like. The “Pencil School” teaches the children how to draw, the “Do-It-Yourself School” teaches them how to make toys, and the “Merry ABC’s” acquaints the children with the letters of the alphabet. This magazine conducts an annual contest for the best drawing by a child. Collaborating in its work are the prominent masters of drawing A. Brei, A. Kanevskii, A. Sazonov, Iu. Uzbiakov, and others, in addition to well-known children’s writers. Since the day of its founding, the editor of this magazine has been People’s Artist of the RSFSR I. Semenov.
