Vienna, Peace of 1866

the peace treaty that ended the Austro-Italian War of 1866.

The Peace of Vienna of 1866 was concluded in Vienna on October 3. It was preceded by the Peace of Prague (Aug. 23, 1866), which was signed after the victory of Prussia (Italy’s ally) over Austria. According to the Peace of Prague, Austria agreed in particular to the incorporation of Venetia in the Kingdom of Italy. (This was achieved through the mediation of France.) The same point was repeated in the Vienna treaty; the borders of the territory ceded by Austria were determined by the previously existing administrative borders of the Lombard-Venetian kingdom. (According to the decision of the Congress of Vienna of 1814-15, Lom-bardy and Venetia were part of the Austrian Empire.)
