Povenets

 

an urban-type settlement in Medvezh’egorsk Raion, Karelian ASSR. Located on Lake Onega, 26 km from the Medvezh’ia Gora railroad station. Starting point of the Baltic-White Sea Canal.

In the 15th century Povenets was a settlement of the Viazhi Novgorod Monastery. In the late 17th century it was a riadok (trade and artisan center). Peter I founded an iron foundry in Povenets in 1703 that later closed in 1736. Povenets was the chief city of Olonets Namestnichestvo (Vicegerency) from 1782, of Arkhangel’sk Namestnichestvo from 1796 to 1801, and of Olonets Province after 1802.
