Vidzemes Upland
Vidzemes Upland
a hilly elevation in the northeast Latvian SSR. It consists of the Central Vidzemes Upland (with the highest point in Latvīa, Mount Gaizinkalns, 311 m), and the Alūksne, or Eastern Vidzemes, Upland to the northeast of it (Mount Dēlinkalns, 271 m), which farther on (in the Estonian SSR) becomes the Haanja Upland. The Vidzemes Upland is formed chiefly of morainal loam lying on Devonian deposits (mainly dolomites). In the lowlands are lakes (the largest are Alauksts, Aluksne, and Inesis).
