, he succeeded in isolating (1921) from the pancreas the hormone later called insulin. For this he shared with Macleod the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He was knighted in 1934. Besides his work on insulin, he made valuable studies of the cortex of the adrenal glands, of cancer, and of silicosis and stimulated research in aviation medicine. He was killed in a plane crash while en route to England on a medical war mission.
