Roll Pass Designing

Roll Pass Designing

(pass designing, sizing), a set ofmethods for determining the dimensions, shape, number, andtype of arrangement of rolling mill passes. Roll pass designingalso includes the calculation of pressing forces and their distribu-tion on the roll passes. Only section iron is rolled between theshaped rolls. Sheets and wide strips are pressed between rollerswith a smooth cylindrical or barrel-shaped surface. Severalpasses are made for each section; a square or round billet ac-quires a specified form on each successive passage. The rollpasses are designed to avoid excessive stresses in the metal beingrolled, since such stresses could lead to the formation of cracksand other flaws.
