Baidara

Baidara

Russian name for a boat used by the maritime Chukchi, Koryak, and Eskimo, consisting of a wooden frame covered with walrus skin. (Among the Evens along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk the baidaras were also made of wooden planks.) Fishing baidaras accommodated one to seven or nine men, and freight baidaras had room for 20 to 30 people. The baidaras were propelled by oars, although some types had a fore-and-aft sail.
