Poultry Raising, Institute of
(full name, All-Union Scientific Research and Technological Institute of Poultry Raising of the Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR), an institute specializing in the raising of poultry; it was organized in 1931 in the city of Zagorsk, Moscow Oblast.
As of 1974 the Institute of Poultry Raising had departments of meat production technology, egg production technology, selection and genetics, the biology and technology of poultry reproduction, poultry feeding, physiology and veterinary science, economics, and informational services. The institute’s experimental farm has a selection farm, a hatchery producing 1.2 million broilers a year, a commercial egg-production shop, and a competition experiment station. Breed groups of dual-purpose chickens—Zagorsk Salmon and Moscow White—have been produced at the institute. The Institute of Poultry Raising has a graduate program, which offers courses both at the institute and through the mail. The institute grants candidate’s and doctoral degrees. Since 1933 it has published Trudy (Transactions).
