Tagil Cattle

a breed of dairy cattle. It was developed in the 18th and 19th centuries in the area surrounding Nizhnii Tagil, in the Urals, by crossing local cattle with Kholmogory and Dutch breeds. The color is predominantly black and white or black; sometimes it is red, brown, or gray. Bulls weigh 700–900 kg, and cows 400–500 kg. Milk yields are 3,500–3,800 kg per lactation, and 5,000 kg or more on the best farms. The butterfat content of the milk is 4.0–4.2 percent. The animals are adapted to severe climatic conditions. The breed is raised in Sverdlovsk, Cheliabinsk, and Tiumen’ oblasts and in the Udmurt ASSR.
