visual separation

The means employed by air traffic control to separate aircraft in terminal areas. This is done by the controller while observing the aircraft involved and issuing the instructions to ensure that aircraft avoid each other. It may also be done by the pilot who observes another aircraft and maneuvers accordingly to avoid a collision. “Maintain visual separation” is also an ATC (air traffic control) instruction.
