Rama in the ancient epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, a hero who journeyed from northern India to the island of Lanka (Sri Lanka) to rescue his wife Sita, who had been kidnappped by the demon Ravana. Rama is venerated in Hinduism as one of the earthly incarnations (the seventh avatar) of Vishnu, and in Vishnuism he is the chief object of worship, together with Krishna.
