Established: 1990.
Location:On the Louisiana gulf coast, just northeast of New Orleans.
Facilities:Hiking trails, cultural sites, boardwalk, pavilion, restrooms.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicycling, crawfishing, crabbing, educational programs.
Special Features:As many as 50,000 waterfowl use the wetland areas of the refuge during the fall, winter, and early spring months. It is the largest urban wildlife refuge in the country.
Habitats: 23,000 acres of fresh and brackish marshes.
Access: Open during daylight hours.
Wild life: Brown pelican, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, as well as waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, swamp rabbits, and alligators.
