[‚par·ə·fə′mō·səs] (medicine) Retraction and constriction, especially of the prepuce behind the glans penis. Also known as Spanish collar. Retraction of the eyelid behind the eyeball.

Paraphimosis

strangulation of the glans penis by the internal layer of the prepuce that usually occurs when the prepuce is forcibly retracted from the glans. Predisposing conditions are phimosis, balanitis, and scarring of gonorrheal or chancroid ulcers along the edges of the prepuce. Constriction by the preputial ring gives rise to circulatory disturbances in the glans penis and in the internal layer of the prepuce. The glans and prepuce may undergo partial necrosis and, occasionally, become gangrenous. The treatment for paraphimosis is surgery. Prevention includes hygienic care of the prepuce and surgical correction of phimosis.

This may be assisted by injection of an enzyme, hyaluronidase, to aid the dispersion of OEDEMA fluid. Later CIRCUMCISION is indicated.
