Rolled Grain

grain that has been crushed in a rolling mill or crusher without special cleaning. It is used to feed domesticated agricultural animals because it is assimilated and digested better than whole grain. Grains with hard shells, such as barley, millet, sorghum, dry corn, vetch, and peas, are particularly well-suited to crushing. The degree of crushing depends on the properties of the feed and the type and age of the livestock. Hogs better utilize finely crushed rolled grains (smaller than 1 mm), cattle thrive on medium and coarse types (of between 1.5 and 4 mm in size), and horses use coarse rolled grains or shelled grains. Young animals are fed finely crushed grains. Dry rolled grain and also fermented silage should be mixed with fresh feeds.
