seismonasty
seismonasty (ˈsaɪzməˌnæstɪ) n (Botany) botany a nastic movement in response to shock, esp the rapid folding of the leaflets of the sensitive plant due to changes in turgor pressure caused by vibration[C20: from seismo- + -nasty]Seismonasty
Seismonasty the movement of plant organs in response to contact and shaking. Seismonasty is most strikingly expressed by the leaves of Mimosa pudica when the plant is shaken. The contractions and bends of the anthers in many plants of the families Compositae and Berberidaceae are very similar to seismonasty. The mechanism of the contractive movements is based on a change in the electrophysiological state of the tissue that leads to a transformation of actomyosin-type proteins. |
