(vĭg), Finn. Uikujärvi, Rus. Vygozero, lake, c.300 sq mi (780 sq km), NW European Russia, in Karelia, between Lake Onega and the White Sea. It is fed by the Vyg River, which also drains it into the White Sea. The lake is a part of the Baltic–White Sea Canal.Vyg
a river in the Karelian ASSR. It flows out of Lake Verkhotinnoe. Before it enters Vyg Lake it is called Verkhnii Vyg (Upper Vyg); after it leaves, it is the Nizhnii Vyg (Lower Vyg). It divides into two and flows into Onega Bay of the White Sea near the city of Belomorsk. Length of the Verkhnii Vyg, 135 km; of the Nizhnii Vyg, 102 km. Basin area, 27,100 sq km. The Verkhnii Vyg flows through low swampy banks and the Verkhnee, Uzkoe, and Nizhnee lakes. It has high water rises in the spring (from late April to early May). The average annual water flow is 267 cu m per sec (village of Vorozhgora). Logs are floated on the river. The Nizhnii Vyg, which used to have many rapids, is now regulated (hydroelectric power plant installations) and is part of the system of the White Sea-Baltic Canal.
