Vlasov, Vasilii Zakharomch

Born Feb. 11 (24), 1906, in the village of Kareevo, now in Ferzikovo Raion, Kaluga Oblast; died Aug. 7, 1958, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in mechanics and the theory of elasticity. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953).

Vlasov graduated from the Moscow Higher Civil Engineering School in 1930. In 1935 he became a professor at the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute; in 1946 he began working at the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works dealt with the strength of materials, the theory of elasticity, and design theory for thin-walled shafts. Vlasov investigated methods of calculating folded systems and shells. He received the State Prize of the USSR (1941 and 1950) and was awarded three orders and a medal.
