Seiberling, John

(1919–2008)Environmentalist and preservationist Seiberling was an eight-term congressman from Ohio who helped draft more than 60 park-related bills, including the one that established the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. President Bill Clinton honored him with the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2001, calling him an “environmental hero.” Seiberling masterminded the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, doubling the size of U.S. national parks and wildlife refuges and tripling the amount of federally designated wilderness throughout the United States. He also helped create the Historic Preservation Fund, and he received the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s top honor, the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, in 2002.
