Rajicic, Stanojlo

Born Dec. 3 (16), 1910, in Belgrade. Serbian composer and teacher. Member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1958).

In 1935, Rajičić graduated from the Prague Conservatory, where he had studied composition under R. Karel and J. Suk (in the “master school”) and pianoforte under A. Sima and K. Hoffmeister. He pursued advanced studies on the pianoforte with W. Kerschbaumer in Vienna. In 1940 he began teaching composition at the Belgrade Academy of Music, and from 1958 to 1963 he was director of the Institute of Musicology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

In addition to the opera Simonides (1956), Rajičić wrote ballets, melodramas, orchestral works—including six symphonies, concertos for solo instrument and orchestra, chamber music, piano compositions, and a number of song cycles with orchestra, including On Lipari Island’s and Yellow Leaves. He also wrote film scores, arrangements of folksongs, and other works. Rajičić visited the USSR in 1962.
