Rajasthani

Rajasthani

an Indic language spoken in the state of Rajasthan in northwestern India and several adjacent regions of Pakistan by more than 20.5 million persons (1971, estimate). Rajasthani is one of the Indo-European languages.

The major dialects of Rajasthani are Marwari and Mewari. The language has a well developed system of tones, including a clear falling tone discovered by the Soviet scholar Iu. A. Smir-nov. It has a distinctive consonant system, including a phonological opposition between soft and hard consonants and between a nonnasal labial sonant and a nonnasal labiodental sonant. Morphological features include a synthetic form for the ergative case, specific forms of the infinitive, an adverbial participle, and a synthetic passive. Rajasthani is written in the De-vanagari and Mahajani scripts, more often the former.
