(All Russian Cooperative Society Limited; from 1922, Arcos Ltd), a joint-stock trading company. It was established in London on June 11, 1920, by a Soviet cooperative delegation and in accordance with English laws; it was registered as a private company with limited liability. Arcos operated as the representative of Soviet foreign trade organizations, performing export and import operations. It had offices and divisions in a number of countries. By early 1927 its turnover exceeded £100 million. On May 12, 1927, the English police carried out a provocative attack on Arcos and the Soviet trade delegation. A rupture in Anglo-Soviet diplomatic relations ensued, and Arcos temporarily ceased work. After diplomatic relations were renewed (1929), its activity resumed but on a smaller scale.
