terrain flight Flight close to the earth's surface during which air speed, height, and/or altitude are adapted to the contours and cover of the ground to avoid enemy detection and fire. The terrain flight can be divided into three parts: nap of the earth, or NOE; contour; and low-level flight. NOE is flying as close to the earth's surface as vegetation or obstacles will permit. Air speed and altitude vary in accordance with weather conditions and ambient light. Contour flight is characterized by varying altitude, adhering to the contours of the earth, and a constant air speed. Low-level flight is performed at a constant air speed and altitude. When performing a reconnaissance, a pilot may go from one technique to another while maneuvering over a route.AcronymsSeeTERFterrain flight
