Umbrian-Marchigian Apennines

mountains in Italy consisting of the Apennines between the Metauro and Tronto rivers. The mountains extend approximately 130 km in length and rise to an elevation of 2,478 m at Monte Vettore. They are composed of limestones, sandstones, and flysch. Karst landforms are found, including more than 100 grottoes, craters, and karst springs. The mountains are dissected by deep longitudinal and transverse valleys on the individual massifs. There is a deposit of brown coal at Gubbio. The lower parts of the slopes, to an elevation of 500 m, have thickets of evergreen shrubs and at higher elevations there are deciduous forests of beech, oak, and hornbeam, as well as coniferous forests and meadows.
