paracoccidioidomycosis [par″ah-kok-sid″e-oi″do-mi-ko´sis] an often fatal, chronic granulomatous disease caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis; it is endemic in Brazil and also occurs elsewhere in South and Central America and in arid regions of the southwestern United States. Infection primarily involves the lungs, but spreads to the skin, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, and internal organs. Amphotericin B is the specific drug used for treatment.
