Postmasburg

 

a center of the mining industry in the Republic of South Africa, in Cape of Good Hope Province. Population, 4,700 (1960). Railroad junction. Postmasburg has one of the largest deposits of manganese ores in the capitalist world; total reserves are estimated at 60 to 100 million tons (1962). More than 2 million tons were mined in 1970. The ores are used primarily for export to the USA and Western Europe. There are also diamond and asbestos deposits in the Postmasburg area.
