A diet that provides 300–700 kcal/day (normal intake is ±2500 kcal/day), which must be supplemented with high-quality protein. Given the risk of death due to intractable cardiac arrhythmias, the diet should be limited in duration.
 
Adverse effects
Orthostatic hypotension due to decreased Na+, decreased norepinephrine secretion, fatigue, hypothermia, cold intolerance, xeroderma, hair loss, dysmenorrhoea.
