 [stēl] diversion of something from its normal course, usually referring to blood flow in occlusive arterial disease.subclavian steal in occlusive disease of the subclavian artery, a reversal of blood flow in the ipsilateral vertebral artery from the basilar artery to the subclavian artery beyond the point of occlusion; this may deprive the brain of blood and cause the subclavian steal syndrome.
