terminal server

A device which connects many terminals (serial lines) to alocal area network through one network connection. Aterminal server can also connect many network users to itsasynchronous ports for dial-out capabilities and printeraccess.

(1) Hardware or software that connects terminals to a host computer. Years ago, a terminal server was part of a mainframe or a stand-alone front end processor attached to the mainframe.

(2) A server that supports multiple users at remote PCs or terminals. See Terminal Services, Remote Desktop Services and thin client.
