terminal radar service area (TRSA)

Airspace surrounding designated airports in which ATC (air traffic control) provides radar vectoring, sequencing, and spacing on a full-time basis for all IFR and participating VFR (visual flight rules) aircraft. The service provided in TRSA is called Stage III service. Pilot participation is urged but not mandatory. TRSAs are depicted on VFR sectional and terminal area charts with a solid black line and altitudes for each segment. The term is now obsolete.
