Östberg, Ragnar

Born July 14, 1866, in Stockholm; died there Feb. 5, 1945. Swedish architect.

Östberg was a representative of the national romantic trend in architecture. He studied at the Higher Technical School and at the Academy of Arts in Stockholm. In 1921 he was made a professor at the Academy of Arts. His most important work, the city hall in Stockholm, dominates an important part of the city center; the building recalls elements of medieval architecture. In his later works, for example, the Naval Museum in Stockholm (1934), Östberg resorted to stylization in the manner of Swedish baroque and classicism.
