volar plate vo·lar plate (vōl'ăr plāt) A tough ligamentous band bridging the volar aspect of the proximal interphalangeal joint in fingers II-V and opposing hyperextension. Rupture of the volar plate due to injury or disease permits recurrent hyperextension and can lead to swan-neck deformity. |
