Voith-Schneider propulsion system

[′fȯit ′shnī·dər prə′pəl·shən ‚sis·təm] (naval architecture) A system for ship propulsion, serving both as propeller and rudder, that consists of one or two vertical-axis rotors located underwater at the stern; rotor disks are flush with the shell plating which is approximately horizontal, and five to eight spadelike vertical-impeller blades are fitted near the periphery of the disks.
