Voinarovskii, Andrei

Year of birth unknown; died 1740. Ukrainian cossack starshina (major). Large landowner; advocate of the transfer of the Ukraine to Polish rule. Nephew of Hetman Mazepa and active participant in his conspiracy.

After the Battle of Poltava (1709), Voinarovskii fled, with Mazepa and Charles XII, to Bendery and then to Germany. In Hamburg he was arrested by demand of the Russian government (1718) and banished to Yakutsk. Tsarism’s reprisals against Voinarovskii gave rise to the idealization of his image (in contradiction to historical reality) in K. F. Ryleev’s poem Voinarovskii.
