post empiricism

post empiricism

the repudiation of the idea that science and knowledge can be grounded in entirely theory-neutral observations of the kind suggested by EMPIRICISM and POSITIVISM. Post empiricism involves an acceptance of accounts of science such as those proposed by KUHN and FEYERABEND. This need not imply that science or knowledge is an irrational or relativistic enterprise. However, it does mean that scientists and social scientists cannot escape the necessity to argue the reasons why one theory should be accepted and another rejected, that there exist no simple grounds for knowledge claims.
