Velocita Wireless

Velocita Wireless

A wireless carrier for low-speed data such as text messaging, telemetry, automated vehicle location and paging. Velocita comprises more than 2,400 base stations within the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Using the venerable Mobitex network, which transfers data at 8 Kbps in the 900 MHz SMR band, Velocita was created when the Cingular Interactive division of Cingular Wireless was acquired by Cerberus Capital Management in 2004 and renamed. Velocita was acquired by Sprint Nextel in 2006 and then by United Wireless Holdings, Inc. in 2007, the latter making Velocita a subsidiary. In 2008, Velocita acquired Skytel from Bell Industries to boost its presence in the machine-to-machine (M2M) market. See Mobitex, DataTAC and CDPD.
