Panpo

a village near the city Hsian in Shensi Province (Chinese People’s Republic).

Investigations of a Neolithic settlement of the Yangshao culture, dated by Chinese archaeologists to the beginning of the third millennium B. C., have been going on near Panp’o since 1953. More than 40 rounded and square dwellings have been found; each house is built of clay on a wooden frame and has a hearth in the center. The settlement is surrounded by a ditch. Beyond the boundaries of the settlement there are potters’ kilns and a cemetery. Tools made of stone and bone have been found. Much of the pottery found near Panp’o is painted. In order to protect the site, a concrete pavilion has been constructed over most of it. There is a museum near the site.
