Radó, Sándor

 

Born Nov. 5, 1899, in Ujpest, now part of Budapest. Hungarian cartographer and geographer; doctor of geographic and economic sciences (1958). Member of the Communist Party since 1918.

Radó was active in the revolutionary movement in Hungary in 1919 and in the antifascist struggle during World War II. He was a professor and department head at the Karl Marx University in Budapest from 1958 to 1966. In 1955 he was appointed director of the cartographic survey of the Hungarian People’s Republic, and in 1965 he became the editor of the information periodical Cartactual. He is head of the editorial board in charge of publishing a world map on a scale of 1:2,500,000.

Radó’s principal works have dealt with the economic geography of Hungary and the geography of the world economy. Since 1972 he has been chairman of the Commission on Thematic Cartography of the International Cartographic Association. Radó was awarded the Kossuth Prize in 1963 and the State Prize of the Hungarian People’s Republic in 1973. He has also received orders of the USSR and the Hungarian People’s Republic.
