Slavia
Slavia
(al-Slaviya), a name for Rus’, found in works of tenth-century Arabic authors, for example, al-Istakhri and Ibn Hau-kal. Most historians identify Slavia with the land of the ll’men’ Slavs, and its capital—the city of Salau (Slava)—with either Novgorod or an earlier city on the same site. Some early medieval sources use “Slavia” to refer to Poland and the state formations of the Polabian and Baltic Slavs.
