It is a port and trade center. Tacloban was the first landing place (Oct., 1944) for U.S. troops in the World War II campaign that liberated the Philippines from the Japanese; a monument there commemorates the event. In 2013 Typhoon Haiyan devastated the city. Tacloban is the seat of Eastern Visayas State Univ., Leyte Normal Univ., and a campus of the Univ. of the Philippines Visayas.Taclobana city in the Philippines, in the northeastern part of the island of Leyte. Capital of Leyte Province. Population, 73,000 (1970). A bridge built in 1974 between Tacloban and the island of Samar is part of the Trans-Philippine Expressway. Tacloban has an airport and is the chief trade and distribution center of the island. Baskets, sacks, pottery, and clothing are produced in the city. |
