slashdot effect (jargon)An effect where a document on a WWW server islinked to from another, popular, site, with the resultanttraffic overloading the server so that a connection cannot bemade to it. This is especially likely if the server isrunning Microsoft IIS.
The term was coined by readers of the Unix advocacy web site slashdot.org.slashdot effectThe condition in which a website is overloaded with traffic because of a positive news article or review published at another website. The term comes from Slashdot.com, the "News for Nerds" site that posts articles on technical subjects submitted by users. The term has evolved to mean any electronic onslaught.
