A common congenital heart malformation (OMIM:614433) characterised by incomplete closure of the wall between the atria, resulting in blood flow from the left to the right atria. 
Molecular pathology
Defects in CITED2, which encodes a transcriptional coactivator of the p300/CBP-mediated trancription complex, causes atrial septal defect type 8.
