In east-central VA, north of Richmond; organized 1721 from Essex, King William, and King and Queen counties. Name Origin: For Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740), lieutenant governor of the colony of VA (1710-22). Name is a combination of Spotswood and sylvania 'woodlands,' a play on the surname.
