Velikaia

 

(also Bol’shaia or Onemen), a river in the Chukchi National Okrug, Magadan Oblast, RSFSR. Formed by the confluence of the Kuiimveem and the Kyl’vygeivaam rivers, which rise on the Koriak plateau. Length (from the source of the Kyl’vygeivaam River), 556 km; basin area, 31,000 sq km. A considerable part of the river flows through the Anadyr’ lowland, separating into numerous branches and channels. It empties into the gulf of Onemen of the Bering Sea. It is fed by snow and rain. The Velikaia freezes in mid-October, and the ice breaks in late May or early June.

a river in Pskov Oblast, RSFSR; flows into Pskov Lake, forming a delta. Length, about 430 km; area of basin, 25,200 sq km. It rises in the Bezhanitskaia Upland, where it flows through numerous small lakes; lower down it flows through a broad valley. The river is in high water in spring, when the water level rises as much as 1.6 m; there are frequent fall floods. At the mouth of the river the water level falls and rises, with the water rising as much as 0.5 m. The average annual water flow is 134 eu m per sec, near the village of Piatonovo. The river freezes in November, and the ice breaks up in April. The main tributaries of the Velikaia are the Issa, Siniaia, and Utroia from the left and the Sorot’, Cherekha, and Pskova from the right. The river is floatable. It is navigable starting from the Beliaevo wharves (about 45 km). The cities of Opochka, Ostrov, and Pskov are on the Velikaia River.
