Thurston (3,139 ft/960 m), is the highest peak. The Dreketi is the principal river. The large east peninsula is connected with the rest of the island by a narrow isthmus. There are gold mines and sugarcane plantations on Vanua Levu. Vanua Levuvolcanic island in the Pacific Ocean; second in size of the Fiji Islands (Melanesia). Vanua Levu has an area of 5,500 sq km and a population of more than 40,000 (1960). The island is of continental origin and is surrounded by coral reefs. It has mountains with an elevation of up to 1,031 m. The climate is tropical and humid. The southeastern windward slopes of the mountains are covered with moist, tropical forests; whereas the leeward slopes are covered by savannas. There are plantations of sugarcane, rice, bananas, cotton plants, and coconut palms, as well as lumbering. The island was discovered by A. Tasman in 1643. Vanua LevuVanua Levu
