This Anangu-owned park, leased to the Australian government by the aboriginal people, contains Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, a reddish brown sandstone monolith that is the world's largest monolith and a major tourist attraction. Kata Tjuta, or the Olgas, a group of 36 monoliths also located in the park, includes Mt. Olga; they are composed of reddish brown conglomerate. Established as a national park in 1977, the area was restored to the Anangu and leased back to the government in 1985, and is now jointly managed. |
