Ulu Dağ

(in ancient times, Olympus), a mountain range in western Turkey. The range is about 80 km long and has a maximum elevation of 2,493 m (Mount Ulu Dag). The slopes are composed of granites, gneisses, and schists, and the crest is composed of marbles. There are cirques, moraines, and other glacial land-forms, as well as planation surfaces. The slopes have chestnut, beech, and coniferous forests, and above 2,000 m there are meadows and elfin woodlands. The area is popular for winter sports and tourism. The city of Bursa is located at the northwestern base of Ulu Dag.
