Trento

a city in northern Italy on the Adige River. Capital of the province of Trento and of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Population, 94,700 (1973). The city has an electrometallurgical industry and a chemical industry. Manufactures include machinery, wood products, and foodstuffs. There are hydroelectric power plants in the vicinity, on the Adige and its tributaries.

In ancient times, Trento was a Gallic settlement. In the fourth century A.D., it became a bishopric. The city (known as Triden-tum in Latin and as Trient in German) was the seat of an ecclesiastical principality from 1027—when the bishop of Trento acquired the title of prince—until 1803. In the Peasant War of 1524–26, uprisings in the Trento region continued through 1526. The city was the site of the 16th-century Council of Trent.

Trento belonged to Austria in the 19th century, with an interval from 1810 to 1814 when, as part of the Italian kingdom, it was under French rule. In 1919, the Treaty of St. Germain gave Trento to Italy.
